Are you in the Holiday spirit? Care to share some firewood?

We’ve been lucky so far this year, and the cold air has stayed away.  We all know that wont last long. It is going to get cold…VERY cold, and many Mainers, myself included will have a rough time making sure the furnace has oil, the pellet stove has pellets, or the wood stoves have wood.

I have a friend that I have known for a couple of years now. He and his wife have had a rough summer. She has some medical issues, and has had some surgeries, and now he just recently had surgery.

Like many of us, they are under insured. Their medical bills are mounting. They do what they can to pinch pennies, and like many of us, they barter.

Sometimes pinching pennies, and bartering isn’t enough. Sometimes we need to reach out and ask our friends and neighbors for a hand up.

These folks wont have any money coming in until some time in December. Like all of us, they also have friends and family that they would like to remember at Christmas.

What I am asking today is for anybody that might have some firewood they could spare. One single arm load will keep a wood stove stoked for a couple of hours. Two arm loads a few hours more.

If you burn wood, would you be willing to put on an extra sweater for a few hours to help somebody keep warm and cozy while they recuperate from surgery?

Maybe you have a shop in your garage, and you typically burn scraps from wood working projects. Would you be willing to share a few stovefulls to keep a living room warm so the grand babies can visit?

How about you folks with ice fishing shacks? Would you be willing to spend a day sitting out of the wind, but leave the stove cold to help keep somebody’s pipes from freezing?

In a perfect world, somebody would come up with a cord or two to help these folks, and that would be AMAZING… But if everybody reading this came up with an armload of dried hardwood think how much that could help!

Do you have some dead trees on your place I could cut up for these folks? How about it folks? If you are within twenty miles of Bangor/Newport, and you can spare an armload of firewood or more, I would LOVE to hear from you!!!

If you have some firewood for sale, any chance you would be willing to take a step back in time, and make a delivery for them, and they can make payments once the money starts coming in again?

Don’t let me down folks!  I know most of you are good hearted people, based on all the grief you have given me about my posts dealing with people and the environment!  ;o)

About Doug Alley

I grew up in Bath, Maine in an upper lower class family with 3 step sisters, a step brother, and a little sister. After high school I spent 3 years serving in the USAF at Elmendorf AFB in Anchorage AK. I've competed in, and won, demolition derbies. I've competed in, and never won, stock car races. I am the 47-year-old father of an 11-year-old boy who is pretty sure he is smarter than I ever was. We live on a little less than an acre of land in a 1973 mobile home in Stetson with my wife Jen, some cats, a few chickens, and rabbits, and a couple of goats. I hunt, fish, camp out, dabble in photography, gardening, and I cook in variable degrees of near success.
